Is It Kismet?

Faith, kismet, fate, planetary alignment…
Whatever you call it, there are those that believe that there are forces that drive us within the universe. I happen to be one of those people. I’m not sure that every one of my steps has been predetermined, but I do believe that there are forces in nature that drive or direct our paths.
For example, over the past few weeks, I have been feeling out of sorts and not sure if I was making “wise” decisions. Then, yesterday, on our way to the pool, my son found a wallet. We opened it and discovered that the wallet had an ID card, social security card, birth certificate and money. My son said that we should give it to the pool’s lost & found. Considering the sensitive nature of the contents, I told my son that we would leave the pool early, mapquest the address on the ID card and deliver the wallet to the owner.
It turns out that the owner did not live in my neighborhood, but was only 5.3 miles away (mapquest is very specific). On my way to the owner’s home, I replayed the afternoon. I had not wanted to go to the pool because I was tired. Upon hearing about my plan to deliver the wallet, my husband wanted me to wait until tomorrow. “What was the rush, anyway?”
A few minutes into my trip, I saw that I was heading into rain clouds. Shortly thereafter, I found myself in heavy rain…“Yeah, what is the rush?” I thought to myself. But I continued, cursing my determination.
Upon arrival at my destination, the heavy rain had transformed into a deluge. Sighing, I ran from my car to the front door and rang the doorbell, three times. Great. Not only did I deliver this stupid thing in the rain, now I’m not going to get thanked for it. (Okay, that was not my original reason for the delivery, but evidently, I did have it in mind.) Resigning myself to obscurity in my good deed, I left the wallet in the storm door and ran back to my car.
Now, I’m drenched and sit for a brief moment to realize, I shouldn’t need to be thanked for doing the right thing because doing the right thing feels good. Maybe this act of good will on my part will be passed forward to someone else. I smile and back away from the house.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see a flash as the wallet’s owner leaps out of his house, glancing back at the falling wallet, and runs into the street. Stopping me, he thanks me over and over as he has spent the afternoon looking for his treasured wallet. He is soaked as he continues to tell me that he normally didn’t carry his social security card and birth certificate, but was taking his driver’s license test first thing in the morning and wanted to be prepared – thank you from the bottom of my heart, ma’am, you are a life-saver.
He shook my hand and ran back to his awaiting mother who waved emphatically as I drove away.
Faith, kismet, fate, planetary alignment…whatever it is… my heart feels lifted and warm and I am grateful to have done the right thing, for having made the right decision and for having been placed on that path.
